Studies Show Cancer Cells Die With Acai Berries

By

A study that was recently conducted in Gainesville, Florida has shown that the acai berry extract is killing cancer cells that have up to now have been resistant to other experiments. This study at the University of Florida is among the first to study what the acai berry can do.

In this test, leukaemia cells were exposed to acai berry extract, with the surprising result that 86% of the cancer cells self-destructed. Acai berries were already known as one of the best sources of antioxidant compounds, but this study’s findings are truly extraordinary. An assistant professor at the University of Florida (in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Services) was able to confirm for us that this figure of 86% was indeed the case.

Other fruits may also contain antioxidants which can kill leukaemia cells, but all of the research done to date is only preliminary, as there are other things which need to be taken into account. The figures yielded by this first study, however show great promise.

Australia has jumped on board, promoting a diet that is derived from exotic fruits, namely acai, noni, goji, and mangosteen. Promotions here are running high for various juices made with all natural fruits. Antioxidant properties have been found in many of these native fruits.

A Brisbane, Australia study from March of this year (1998) studied the differences between antioxidant compounds found in fruits and fruit juices and those present in olive leaves. While this study concluded that olive leaves contain some antioxidant properties, the studies performed on acai berries have had far more conclusive results.

The most interesting of these studies are, of course, the ones which have been done on fruits and cancer. U.S. researchers are working tirelessly to find a cure for cancer, especially leukaemia. Australia is doing the same in regard to cancer research. Leukaemia is the top disease related cause of death in children aged 20 and younger worldwide. For this reason, leukaemia research is a priority for many nations around the globe.

Because only basic research has been done up to a certain point, more studies are warranted. The acai berries have anywhere from 50 to 75 compounds that have not been established yet. The main reason the berries are so hard to study is that they are very perishable.

Roughly the same size as a blueberry, the acai berry ripens to a dark purple and contains a seed. These berries if not used or frozen quickly after picking, begin to decompose. This berry is from the Amazon basin, so freezing or using it immediately is not always an easy thing to accomplish.

To be imported all the way to Australia, acai powder works best. This is produced from acai berries by dehydrating and then freeze-drying acai pulp. Far easier and cheaper to export than are the ripe berries, this powder can then be used in all sorts of nutritional supplements and foods. The powder contains all of the same nutritional and health benefits of the fresh berries.

While the research is still very much a work in progress, this and other newer therapies give researchers hope that someday there may be a cure developed for the scourge of leukaemia.

About the author: Americo Tognetti is astounded by the acai berry because it provides so many benefits to everyone in the Acai Fruit Powder.
